Tapestry Wall Hangings Are Having a Moment: Here's How to Style Them Right

Outdoor tapestry hanging

Working as a custom home builder across Queensland, I've watched interior design trends come and go like the tides at Bargara Beach.  But there's something particularly exciting happening right now with tapestry wall hangings – they're making a genuine comeback, and I'm seeing more clients incorporate them into their new builds and renovations than ever before. Unlike the heavy, formal tapestries your grandmother might have displayed, today's versions are fresh, versatile, and perfectly suited to our Australian lifestyle.

As one of the established Bundaberg builders in the region, I've noticed that homeowners are moving away from mass-produced artwork towards pieces that tell a story and bring texture into their living spaces. Tapestry wall hangings offer exactly that – a way to add warmth, character, and visual interest without the commitment of permanent fixtures.

Why Tapestries Work So Well In Australian Homes

There's something about the relaxed, natural feel of textile art that suits our way of living. In the coastal and regional Queensland homes we build, tapestries complement the indoor-outdoor lifestyle beautifully. They soften hard surfaces like concrete or timber feature walls, and they're forgiving in our humid climate – unlike some artworks that can warp or fade.

I've found that tapestries work particularly well in open-plan living areas, which are a staple in most of our custom builds. They help define spaces without creating physical barriers, something that's essential when you're dealing with large, flowing floor plans. A well-chosen tapestry can anchor a seating area or create a focal point above a dining table without overwhelming the space.

The practical benefits are worth mentioning, too. Tapestries are relatively affordable compared to large-scale artwork, they're lightweight (important for our timber-framed homes), and they can be easily changed when you fancy a refresh. For families, they're also safer than heavy framed pieces – no glass to worry about with active children around.

Choosing The Right Size And Scale

Getting the proportions right is crucial, and this is where I see homeowners make the most mistakes. A tapestry that's too small will look lost on a large wall, while one that's too big can overwhelm a space entirely. As a general rule, your tapestry should take up about two-thirds of the wall space you're covering.

For standard ceiling heights of 2.7 metres, which we commonly build with, a tapestry measuring around 150cm by 100cm works well above a three-seater lounge. If you're working with higher ceilings – and we're building more homes with 3-metre ceilings these days – you can go larger, but always step back and assess the visual weight.

In bedrooms, consider the scale relative to your bed head. A tapestry above a queen bed should ideally be no wider than the bed itself, while a king bed can handle something slightly broader. I've seen beautiful results where clients have used smaller tapestries as part of a gallery wall arrangement, particularly in hallways or study nooks.

Living Areas

In living spaces, tapestries work best when they complement rather than compete with existing furniture and finishes. If you've got a neutral colour palette – something we see a lot in our builds with white walls and timber accents – you can afford to be bolder with pattern and colour in your tapestry choice.

Position your tapestry at eye level when seated, which is typically around 145-150cm from the floor to the centre of the piece. This creates a natural focal point that doesn't strain the neck to view comfortably.

Bedrooms

Bedrooms offer more flexibility because the viewing angles are different. A tapestry above the bed head creates an instant focal point and adds softness to what can otherwise be a hard-edged piece of furniture. The texture works beautifully with natural linens and cotton bedding – materials that suit our climate perfectly.

For children's rooms, tapestries are an excellent alternative to painted murals or wallpaper that children might outgrow. They can be changed as tastes evolve, and they add warmth to what can sometimes feel like sterile spaces.

Outdoor Areas

This might surprise you, but outdoor tapestries are becoming increasingly popular, particularly for covered alfresco areas and verandahs. We're building more homes with substantial covered outdoor living spaces, and a weather-resistant tapestry can really enhance these areas. Look for pieces made from solution-dyed acrylic or other outdoor fabrics that can handle our weather extremes.

What Works With Queensland's Architecture

The architectural style of your home should influence your tapestry choice. For our classic Queenslander-style builds, traditional or folk-art tapestries feel right at home. The casual, lived-in aesthetic suits the relaxed character of these homes perfectly.

Contemporary builds, which make up a large portion of our work as Bundaberg builders, can handle more geometric or abstract designs. Clean lines and minimal colour palettes work well with modern architecture, but don't be afraid of texture – it adds warmth to what can sometimes feel like cold, contemporary spaces.

For coastal homes, consider the colour palette carefully. Salt air and bright sunlight can fade certain dyes over time, so opt for quality pieces with colourfast materials. Ocean-inspired colours – blues, greens, sandy neutrals – create a cohesive feel with the surrounding environment.

Practical Installation Considerations

From a building perspective, there are a few practical considerations worth mentioning. Most tapestries are lightweight enough to hang on standard plasterboard walls using appropriate fixings, but always check the weight and use proper wall anchors designed for the load.

If you're planning to hang a large, heavy tapestry, it's worth considering this during the building phase. We can easily install additional backing or ceiling-mounted track systems that distribute weight more effectively and give you more flexibility in positioning.

For rental properties or if you're hesitant about making holes in walls, tension rods or ceiling-mounted systems offer alternatives that don't require permanent fixtures.

Creating Cohesive Spaces

The key to making tapestries work in your home is treating them as part of the overall design scheme, not as an afterthought. Consider the existing textures, colours, and patterns in your space. A tapestry should enhance what's already there, not fight for attention.

Layer different textures throughout the room – timber, linen, ceramic, metal – so the tapestry feels integrated rather than isolated. This layered approach creates depth and interest that makes spaces feel more finished and thoughtfully designed.

Remember that lighting plays a crucial role too. Natural light will bring out different aspects of the weave and pattern throughout the day, while strategic artificial lighting can highlight the texture and create beautiful shadows in the evening.

Tapestry wall hangings offer a wonderful way to personalise your home and add character that reflects your personality. They're forgiving, versatile, and perfectly suited to our relaxed Australian lifestyle. Whether you're building new or refreshing an existing space, they're worth considering as part of your overall design story.
